NEW FILMMAKERS FROM SPAIN 2012

CALL FOR ENTRIES

The Audiovisual Producers’ Rights Management Association, EGEDA, in collaboration with the American Cinemateque, is now receiving entries for the 3rd edition of the Student Short Film Contest in the USA. The films submitted will be shown at the following events: the Recent Spanish Cinema Series in Los Angeles and Recent Cinema from Spain in Miami. This tour will present the best of Spanish Cinema and provide new Spanish filmmakers with the opportunity to exhibit their work to the public in this section: the short film competition for Spanish students in the USA: New Filmmakers from Spain.

This initiative is designed to provide exhibition spaces for up-and-coming young directors and producers who are studying at Universities or film schools in the USA.

AWARD

The winning short film will be screened at the opening gala of the Recent Spanish Cinema series in Los Angeles, October 11 - 14 2012, and will be included in the program of Recent Cinema from Spain in Miami, held November 8 -11, 2012. Both film exhibitions are initially scheduled to be held at prestigious venues in each city, the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood and the Olympia Theater at the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts in Miami.

The short film will be also featured on the printed programs, in events communications and on the websites of both events.

The director of the wining short will receive a distribution award from the FREAK Independent Film Agency, the sole sponsor of the competition, which consists of distribution of the short at 50 Spanish festivals. The award also includes a distribution strategy, registration of the winning short film at the festivals specified by the agency, the DVDs required for these entries and management of the selections, in addition to supplying projection copies. The winner undertakes to provide FREAK with the materials required. The winning short will be distributed in copies bearing the phrase “NEW FILMMAKERS FROM SPAIN 2012 Distribution Award” at the beginning and, to this end, the contest winner agrees to edit the copy for distribution to include this information. In the case that the short film winner has already distribution , the prize by FREAK would not be effective in the terms mentioned above.

REGISTRATION TERMS & CONDITIONS

1. To be eligible for this student short film contest, the Spanish nationality student must be studying or have studied at a film school/university in the USA. The applicant must be the director or producer of the short film presented, which must have been made while they were a student, and they must be the rights owner of the film or have authorization to exhibit it. In the event that the university / school is the short film rights-holder, authorization from that institution granting permission to screen the short film at the film exhibitions in both Los Angeles and Miami and a document expressing the willingness of the school to participate in the contest must be attached.

2. Animation, documentary and live-action fiction shorts completed after January 1, 2011 will be accepted.

3. The works presented should be no more than 20 minutes in length including credits.

4. Language: English or Spanish with subtitles: English voiceover with Spanish subtitles or Spanish voiceover with English subtitles.

5. Each participant may submit as many short films as he or she wishes.

6. Each entry submitted must be sent on a separate DVD and with a correctly completed entry form. The DVDs and cases must be labeled with the FILM TITLE, ENTRANT'S NAME, and RUN TIME. The selection panel will automatically reject any submissions which do not fulfill these requirements.

7. The projection format of the winning short film will be: DVD, Beta SP, Blu-Ray disc and DV Cam.

SUBMISSION

No submission fee. Please print out and complete the entry form and send it, along with 2 DVD copies of your film, to the address below. Also, please enclose two still images from the short film and a photo of the applicant director, all in digital format (300ppi). CDs, DVDs, etc., and their cases must be properly labeled with the SHORT FILM TITLE and DIRECTOR'S NAME, and sent to the following address:

The New Filmmakers from Spain organization reserves the right to use these images from the selected short films for event communication and promotion, including on the websites of both film exhibitions.

DEADLINES AND IMPORTANT DATES

DVD submission deadline: September 1, 2012

Communication date to director/ producer of winning short film: September 29, 2012

The winning short film will be announced via email and on both film exhibition websites (www.larecentspanishcinema.com & www.miami.recentcinemafromspain.com) and the contest New Filmmakers from Spain facebook page.

Deadline for receipt of exhibition format material in Los Angeles (only for the winning short film): October 5, 2012.

The Recent Spanish Cinema Series in Los Angeles opening gala event and short film screening is initially scheduled for October 11, 2012.

Recent Cinema from Spain in Miami short film screening is initially scheduled for November 8–11, 2012.

SELECTION

A festival-appointed expert selection committee and judging panel will view all submissions and collectively decide which short film to screen during the Recent Spanish Cinema Series in Los Angeles and Recent Cinema from Spain in Miami.

The panel of judges will decide the order and dates of exhibition of the short film and reserves the right to carry out modifications to these dates. The jury decision will be final.

SHIPPING & NON-RETURN OF DVD COPIES

Shipping costs for copies will be paid by entrants. DVD copies will not be returned and will become part of the contest archives, being destroyed after a period of one year.

ACCEPTANCE OF CONTEST RULES

Participation in this New Filmmakers from Spain contest implies that the applicant has accepted all of the aforementioned contest rules and terms & conditions stipulated herein, as well as the resolution, on behalf of the organization, of any unforeseen discrepancies.
